Simply using positive self-talk or affirmations to change your thoughts, feelings, or behaviors doesn’t bring about long-term change. Yes, you may initially feel encouraged or motivated. However, it is just like the millions of people who eagerly start a new year resolution; if you are like me, you may have pledged to change something at the start of a new year in the past. We were serious and ready to change something: lose weight, eat healthier, go to the gym, leave a job or relationship, start a business, etc… However, what happened after a few weeks, maybe a month or two? Indeed, after the motivation and encouragement began to go away, after our “focus” shifted to something else, we fell back into our old behaviors and patterns, the way we were previously living (programmed).
The negative thoughts and beliefs, the unwanted behaviors, all of these things (the way we have become subconsciously programmed) are stored in our subconscious mind – the part of our mind we are unaware of right now. In fact, right now, you are consciously reading this, but you are not consciously telling yourself to breathe or blink. You are not consciously telling your body to pump blood to your heart, to regulate your blood pressure, to continue to swallow; those things are happening, but they are happening unconsciously that is, you are unaware that something (your subconscious mind) is running programs directing everything to happen. In other words, many of the things that you are doing each day are happening automatically, without you even “thinking” about doing them, just like being on auto-pilot. Ironically, you have programs running on auto-pilot that benefit you (walking, eating, brushing your teeth, driving, etc…) and programs running on auto-pilot that do not benefit you (reactive arguing, responding to “triggers”, smoking, over-eating, etc…). Consider for a moment, what things you have been doing (thoughts and behaviors) that continue to happen, despite not being beneficial to you—things that when you slow it down, you know you want to change, but just can’t seem to permanently change. So, what do you do?
Well, while it has been possible for you to temporarily make changes when consciously thinking about it (conscious mind), it is actually necessary to access your subconscious mind (where everything is programmed). In other words, it is necessary to access your subconscious mind and make adjustments to the old, programs that are not benefiting you that are running in the background (more often running unknowingly in the background); maybe modifying the old programs, or in other cases, deleting the old programs and reinstalling new programs that will now benefit you.
